Windows Vs Linux Operating System

Windows OS Vs Linux OS

Windows OS Vs Linux OS

The operating system is a vital part of the computer system software, without which the application programs will not function. An operating system is a collection of software that manages computer hardware resources. It also provides common services for computer programs.

Windows and Linux are both types of operating systems.

Linux is a multiuser multitasking operating system whereas windows is a multithreaded multitasking operating system.

Windows is a complete operating system package developed by Microsoft and it comes with all system components and software necessary to make a computer workable for normal use.

Whereas Linux is just a kernel which is part of an operating system and it is usually the most important part of an operating system. A kernel is the core of any operating system and all the others components are built on the top of it.

Most important difference is that Linux is an open source project that means you can modify this project as per your own requirement through scripting.

Windows is proprietary project. Only Microsoft can modify it.

Linux have specific location for different types of files. Windows keeps them together in application specific folder. You might find it bit difficult when you switch from Windows to Linux.

Linux is highly secured whereas windows is not.

You can customize your Linux operating system but you cannot customize your windows operating system.

Linux is internet backbone because every server runs on a Linux operating system.

Linux is an open source operating system where as Windows is not Open source. means it is freely available and anyone can download it from the internet.

The most popular are Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Fedora, elementary OS, Puppy Linux, open SUSE Linux, SOLUS OS, Mandriva Linux, Kali Linux, Steam OS, Red Hat Linux, Zorin OS etc.

Linux is developed by a man named Linus Torald from Finland and is now supported by many companies and developer who contribute to Linux’s code. So, now you will think that which is special in Linux that it receives much attention.

It does a lot of tasks which makes an operating system stable and extract good performance from the hardware.

Multiuser - How many users can login simultaneously? Linux supports multiuser to a great extent.

Device Driver - Some vendors don’t give device drivers for Linux.

You need not to reboot your system after a while like in windows.

When Linus Torald released Linux kernel initially, it proved to be very useful for companies as it saved their cost of software development and because they used Linux kernel as a base to develop their built their own software and Linux is a very flexible kernel.

Android mobile operating system uses a highly modified Linux kernel, 9 out of 10 serves run on Linux because it is very stable and does not consume much resources and above all its free.

Microsoft Windows is easy to use and offers users a standard user interface.

Microsoft Windows enjoys support for a wide range of hardware; most hardware developers provide Windows drivers.

Windows OS provides for a somewhat intuitive graphical interface that makes computing a lot easier.

Window had provided easy to use interface for the computer operations, So the normal peoples were able to understand and perform the functions easily. That made the windows OS popular among the people.

There are many different Windows operating systems: 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, 2.01, 2.11, 3.0, 3.1, Windows NT 3.1, 3.11, 3.2, Windows NT 3.5, Windows NT 3.51, 95, Windows NT 4.0, 98, 98 (2nd edition), Windows 2000, Windows Me (Millennium), XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, 11.

A Windows operating system with a capital W is a series of operating systems developed by Microsoft in the 1980’s and continues to be developed today.

The first version was Windows 1.0 in 1985, it was DOS-based as you need to type “win” to start up Windows.

With windows update, users are forced to download the updates.

Linux allows you to buy the cheapest laptop in the store, continue to use that laptop for 5 or 6 years until there is some sort of hardware failure.

Linux is Virus free OS. Its malware free. You will not require to install any anti-virus program and keep on updating it.

Linux is free. Unless you are running a server in an Enterprise level for that you need Red Hat Linux license but apart from that it is free.

The main Linux advantage was that the developers were able to use the Linux core with the aim of designing their own user operating systems. Now Linux is one of the most popular and widespread cores.

Conclusion

I think it all depends on what is your purpose of using any Operating system on your computer. If you are normal user of a Computer, then I would suggest to go for Windows. If you are in IT field and want to use it for development purpose, then you should go for Linux. At the end of the day, each OS has its own pros and cons so no OS is perfect. You should choose your OS depending on your purpose.
