What is Workstation computer and how it is different from server

What is Workstation computer and how it is different from server

A workstation is a computer that is typically more powerful than a personal computer that is often dedicated or optimized for a specific work related task.

1) The company who designs/makes it says it is.
2) The CPU that it's designed for is usually an 'Enterprise' level processor (as mentioned by Aaron Doucette, Intel's Enterprise level CPU is the Xeon family).
3) The workstation is usually compatible with ECC RAM as this can be very important when doing processes that require extra data integrity such as high level audio/video editing and even some large scale programming.

The workstation CPUs are made to do several tasks, or very complex tasks at once. More processing cores=more things that you can process.

There are even 61 core, 244 thread CPUs, like knight’s landing, who have their own uses, and would suck at the tasks that some other CPUs with fewer cores can do. A workstation CPU can never do better gaming than a normal 4 or 6 core CPU, as gaming is concentrated on fewer cores.

A "workstation" tends to be a term used by some PC manufacturers for a computer that fits these requirements, but a workstation may be configured in many different ways depending on what the specific use is.

So, in conclusion, a workstation CPU is anything not aided to do ordinary tasks like surfing the internet, but for more complex purposes.

The workstation computers are used at the areas which require extensive mathematical abilities, and greater memory than that of other low levelled computers these are basically used at scientific, industrial and business environments which require such high levelled abilities but there are some other high levelled computers which have more abilities than the workstations so workstations may not be useful for some normal people but they are used at some areas which have requirement of high level abilities of workstations.

Lots of computers can connect to this, and you can also sell these servers to companies or to the public so they can connect.

How is a server different from a workstation computer?

Server vs. Workstation.

A server is an application or device that performs service for connected clients as part of client server architecture. A workstation is a personal computer that is used for high end applications such as graphic design, video editing, CAD, 3-D design, or other CPU and RAM intensive programs.

All of those are computers, however, developed to fit different uses. and its hardware has changed based on its usage.

A desktop computer is designed for normal users who just use that for entertainment (shopping playing etc.), or to do some simple work (writing documents, making ppt, exploring database etc.). Thus the performance of the computer can various from dump to excellent, and have a nice compatibility.

A workstation is mainly designed for professional user, the professional means that their jobs are complex to the computer, such as developing games, rendering movies or tons of (not a little in a time) pictures and so on. Therefore, that computer will be in superb high performance. And most of them are equipped with professional graphic card which performs superb in all-around.

And a server is a computer that provide internet services for you, like hosting websites or offering internet program. So the servers may be high performance, but must be robust. In older to sustain its services in 24 hours every day without shutting down.
