How to share a folder in windows 10?

For sharing folder in a network your computer should be in a network and should communicate with other computers

First off all you have to disable windows firewall of computer.

(disable firewall – go to control panel > windows firewall > in a left side click on turn off/on firewall in this check whether it’s ON or OFF firewall)

Step:1 To know that your computer is communicating other computers on not, ping other computer by command prompt. Type the following command in CMD

RUN>CMD

Ping computer name/IP

For example, I am trying to ping “Account” (this is a computer name) as showing in bellow image

In this image see the red box, in this box I am showing how to ping computer by name. And in a Blue box I am showing that how to ping other computer by its IP address

You can see here, reply coming from account pc means my computer is in network

If your computer is not connected in network, then this command show’s 

Host is unreachable or time out, massage

Note: You can check the computer name by >right click on My computer >and click on properties.

How to know the Computer IP address?

Open command prompt and in command prompt type, ipconfig This command will show IP address like this

C:\Users\Administrator>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix  

   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.174

   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

(This is My computer IP address – 192.168.1.174)

(Note: This command will show its own IP address)

Once you insure that your computer can communicate with other computers in network,

Now follow some steps to share your folder

Step:2 Right Click on network Icon (which is showing on desktop at  right bottom corner) and click on

“Open Network and sharing Center”

Another way to open Network and sharing Center

Click, Start>Control panel>Network and sharing Center

Step: 3 Here now network and sharing center is opened .Now click on Change advanced sharing settings” which is showing in left side of window

Step: 4 Advanced sharing setting is opened here. Now you can see there are two options 

    Network Discovery

This option enables us to show our computer in list of computers attached in network. And it also enables us to see other computers list on our computer. If this option is turn off then we can’t see other computers list or our computer will also not showed another computer 

    File and printer sharing

This option enables us to share files/folders and printer in a network. If this option is turn off then we can’t share any folder or printer in network

So friends before sharing any folder, first check that "fie and printer sharing" option is turn on

If this is turn off then do on this and click, save changes and close window

Step: 5 now go to the folder which you want to share. I have I folder named share folder I am going to share this folder.  Here now do right click on that folder and click properties, 

Step: 6 here folder properties is opened; now click on sharing Tab. And then click on advanced sharing options

Step:7 The advanced sharing dialog box is now opened here. Here do check on "Share this folder" and then give the share name for this folder, by default original name is showing but you can change this name.

Here I am not changing share folder name, and keeping default name  

Step: 8 now you have to give the permission to users, who can access and edit and read this shared folder. By default everyone can access this folder but only can read they can’t edit this shared folder

Now click on permissions option

Step:9 Now you can see there are three types of permissions   

Permission type

Full Control: - In this permission user can see the folder and also can make changes on that folder

Changes: This permission is similar to full control permission, because if user can do changes                             on folder then  also can see the folder contents 

Read: - In this permission user can only see the folder content but they cannot make changes on this                folder

So friends now choose the users and permissions which you want to apply on this folder and then click on apply and then click OK

Step:10 then again click on apply and OK. Then again click apply ad OK. And close all windows. Now your folder is shared and ready to access from another computer in network

How to access shared folder 

Follow bellow steps

Step:1 go to the PC from where you want to access shared folder and then click on start button, now type run in search bar

Step:2 here run is showing just click on run and then type following network path in run

You can access shared folder by two type

1           

           By computer name OR  By IP address 

\\compuername   or \\ip address

Here I want to access shared folder which I shared from windows 10 PC and that PC name is win10 so I have typed the network path in run

\\win10

As showing in bellow image

When you click on Ok button it will ask for administrator username password of windows 10 computer. just give enter the administrator username and password and then click OK button 

Here now you can see the shared folder appeared. ( In a red circle) The folder share name is showing "Shared folder" as i was told you in step 7. 

Now you can open this folder and see this content if you have permission to make changes in this folder then you can copy or delete data in this folder
